The story
Brief. A family with a farmhouse full to bursting wanted one big room for long tables, music and visiting cousins — something between a barn and a village hall.
Design. A five-bay aisled barn, plain on the outside and open to the ridge within. A kitchen and wash rooms sit in one aisle, leaving the nave clear for whatever the day needs.
Craft. Being so close to the workshop, the carpenters walked the frame over bay by bay on raising week. The larch cladding was charred on site, the old Japanese way.
